JCPenney, formally known as J. C. Penney Company, Inc., is an American department store chain that was founded in 1902 by James Cash Penney. The company has a long history of providing a wide range of merchandise, including clothing, footwear, jewelry, beauty products, electronics, and home furnishings. Throughout its history, JCPenney has undergone several transformations in response to changing consumer preferences and market conditions. The company experienced financial struggles in the early 21st century, and in May 2020, it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. JCPenney has since undergone a restructuring process, which included closing some stores and focusing on improving its e-commerce platform. The company emerged from bankruptcy in December 2020 after being acquired by Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management.
